Is this related to rising CO2 emissions? What about the jump in sea surface temperatures that started in 2023? He is a founding board member of NAU’s Sustainable Ambassadors Program and serves on the board of directors of the Northern Arizona Climate Change Alliance. He has worked with over 160 Arizona teachers to improve their science knowledge and teaching. He was a hired consultant on the development of Flagstaff’s Climate Action and Adaptation Plan. His public presentations on climate change and sustainability have reached tens of thousands of citizens across northern Arizona and beyond. Stefan is the executive producer of four award-winning PBS documentaries on biodiversity and habitat conservation.

Every church and every community from “safe havens” such as North Georgia\, to known hot-zones such as Louisiana and Florida. At the April 16th Cafe\, we will speak with those leading the resilience efforts in the denomination. A focus will include the new and essential development of “Resilience Hubs.” No one can face an (un) natural disaster alone\, not heat\, not storms\, not fires\, not floods. Resilience is something we do together.\n\nThe April 16 Café will feature Stories of Congregations and Annual Conferences working to build Resilience Hubs for their communities. Featuring Scott Parrish\, North Georgia Conference Disaster Response Coordinator\, Shawn Anglim\, FirstGrace UMC New Orleans\, Community Lighthouse initiative and Cara Fleischer\, Florida Annual Conference Creation Care Task Team\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Scott Parrish\n\nRev. Scott Parrish is a deacon in the North Georgia Conference. After many years in congregational ministry he’s served on Connectional Ministries staff since 2014 with focus on mission and disaster response. He’s a hobby farmer in his spare time & was in the first class of UMC Earthkeepers. Scott has lived in the Augusta GA area since 1994\, so his work in coordination with UMCOR leading Conference Disaster Response has been close to home since Hurricane Helene plowed through the southeast.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRev. Shawn Anglim\n\nShawn Anglim is a pastor at First Grace United Methodist Church and a founding member of Community Lighthouse\, a project spearheaded by Together New Orleans\, a solar-equipped\, resilience hub network of faith communities and others is Louisiana. First Grace UMC was born out of a merger of an historical Black church and an historical white church in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. During his leadership the Church\, other projects Shawn has led or developed are the First Grace Community Alliance\, and its two missions Hagar’s House\, a residence for women\, trans women and children without a home\, and Project Ishmael\, a free legal clinic for immigrant children. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCara Fleischer\n\nCara Fleischer is the chair of the Creation Care Task Team of the Florida Conference and started and leads the Creation Care Ministry at her home church of Saint Paul’s UMC in Tallahassee. She is an Earthkeeper\, an eco-communications consultant for ReThink Energy Florida\, a nature writer\, and an elected Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor. She has recently developed a program engaging the bishop and conference staff to promote funding and resilience in her conference.

SUMMARY:Hydrating Human Rights - In the Company of Stewards (LDS & Friends)
DESCRIPTION:Hydrating Human Rights \nVirtually every human rights challenge facing humanity as an underappreciated connection to water policy\, including mass migration\, racism\, gender inequality\, climate change\, armed conflict\, and pandemics. Focusing on water security as a principal public policy aim can therefore have broad impacts across all areas of human rights. On April 15\, Dr. Rhett Larson will discuss how water connects each of these areas\, and the potential risks and benefits of recognizing a human right to water. \n\nMeet our presenter: \nRhett Larson is the Richard Morrison Professor of Water Law at Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. He is also a senior research fellow with the Kyl Center for Water Policy at ASU’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy. Professor Larson’s research and teaching interests are in property law\, environmental law\, and natural resource law\, in particular\, domestic and international water law and policy. He serves on the Arizona Mexico Commission Board of Directors\, Arizona’s Water Infrastructure Finance Authority\, and is legal counsel to the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association. He leads a project to improve water supplies for refugee host communities in Lebanon and Jordan. Professor Larson was a visiting professor and Fulbright Scholar at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador\, a PLuS Alliance visiting fellow with the University of New South Wales in Sydney\, Australia\, and a Lady Davis Fellow and visiting professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the author of Just Add Water: Solving the World’s Problems Using its Most Precious Resource (Oxford University Press\, 2020)\, and his forthcoming book from Cambridge University Press is Day Zero: How Cities Run Out of Water. Professor Larson received his Juris Doctorate from the University of Chicago and his Master of Science from the University of Oxford. \nCan’t make it live? Water holds immense value. Every day\, people use water in different ways including drinking\, agriculture\, industry\, recreation\, hygiene\, sanitation\, and health care.\n \nEvery year since 1993\, World Water Day (22 March) raises awareness and inspires action to tackle the water and sanitation crisis.  It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is a United Nations observance coordinated by UN-Water.\n \nWhy is water considered a natural resource? Water maintains ecological balance. It sustains life. It is necessary for respiration in aquatic organisms. It is essential for photosynthesis.\n \nAccess to water and sanitation is a human right. A well managed water cycle underpins progress across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, particularly in relation to hunger\, gender equity\, health\, education\, livelihoods\, sustainability and ecosystems.Water is also at the heart of adaptation to climate change\, serving as the crucial link between the climate system\, human society and the environment. Without proper water governance\, there is likely to be increased competition for water between sectors and an escalation of water crises of various kinds\, triggering emergencies in a range of water-dependent sectors. The physical world of water is closely bound up with the socio-political world\, with water often a key factor in managing risks such as famine\, epidemics\, inequalities and political instability. \nDid you know?\n• 2.2 billion people (1 in 4) still live without safely managed drinking water\, including 115 million people who drink surface water. (WHO/UNICEF\, 2023).\n• 3.5 billion people (4 in 10) still live without safely managed sanitation\, including 419 million who practise open defecation. (WHO/UNICEF\, 2023).\n• 2 billion people still lack basic hygiene services\, including 653 million with no facility at all. (WHO/UNICEF\, 2023).\n• Around 1\,000 daily deaths of children under five are due to unsafe water\, sanitation and hygiene. (WHO\, 2023)\n• Children under the age of 15 living in countries affected by protracted conflict are\, on average\, almost three times more likely to die from diarrhoeal diseases caused by a lack of safe water\, sanitation and hygiene than by direct violence. (UNICEF\, 2019)\n• More than 2 billion people live in countries under water stress and 3.6 billion face inadequate access to water at least one month per year. (WMO\, 2021)\n• Water-related disasters account for 70% of all disaster related deaths. (World Bank Group\, 2022)\n• Since 2000\, flood-related disasters have increased by 134%. (WMO\, 2021)\n• In 2023\, glaciers lost more than 600 gigatons of water\, the largest mass loss registered in the last five decades. (WMO\, 2024)\n• Only 0.5% of water on Earth is useable and available freshwater. (WMO\, 2021)\n• To meet SDG 6\, progress needs to increase\, on average\, by 6x for safely managed drinking water\, 5x for safely managed sanitation and 3x for basic hygiene. (WHO/UNICEF\, 2023)\n• 72% of all freshwater withdrawals are used by agriculture\, 16% by industries\, and 12% by municipalities. (FAO\, 2023)\n• Global water demand is projected to increase by 20 to 30% by 2050. (UN\, 2018)\n• To produce a person’s daily food\, it takes 2\,000-5\,000 litres of water. A 50% increase in food demand is expected by 2050. (FAO\, 2020)\n• Water-use efficiency has increased by 19.3% globally from 2015 to 2021\, but around 58% of countries still exhibit low water-use efficiency. (FAO\, 2024)\n• The world will not achieve sustainable water management until 2049. (UNEP\, 2024)\n• Only 27% of industrial wastewater is safely treated. (UN-Habitat\, WHO\, 2024)\n• 42% of household wastewater is not safely treated. (UN-Habitat\, WHO\, 2024)\n• Only 56% of monitored water bodies in 120 reporting countries are in “good ambient water quality”. (UNEP\, 2024)\n• Just 43 out of 153 countries sharing transboundary waters have operational arrangements covering 90% or more of their shared water bodies. (UNECE\, UNESCO\, 2024)\n• Every US$ 1 invested in water and sanitation yields a return of US$ 4.3. (UN-Water GLAAS\, 2014)\n• Aid for water and sanitation decreased by 5% between 2015 and 2022. (UN-Water GLAAS\, 2022).\n• Estimates indicate that to achieve SDG 6\, over US$1 trillion will be needed per year. (World Resources Institute\, 2020).
