SUMMARY:Decolonizing Our Activism: The 7th Fire – How to be a Good Ally
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \n\n\n\nIn this interactive workshop\, Sweetwater Nannauck (Tlingit\, Haida\, Tsimshian) will explain how working with Native Americans toward social and environmental justice involves letting go of and dismantling colonial cycles of oppression. She advocates for the protection of the fragile environment of the Northwest Coast\, for tribal sovereignty rights\, and the traditional way of life of Native people.

SUMMARY:Orange Shirt Day - Native American Boarding Schools National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Wear orange today and take the opportunity to further your own or our community’s awareness about Arizona’s Native American Boarding Schools\, their legacy and how facing the past can support truth and reconciliation for the future. \nAccording to research from the National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition (NABS)\, there were 59 Native American boarding schools that operated in Arizona during the boarding school era. This makes Arizona second only to Oklahoma for the total number of such schools.  \nOrange Shirt Society is on a quest to raise awareness on the impacts of Indian Residential Schools\, and to honour the healing journey of survivors\, their families\, and those that never made it home.  Learn more: \n\nhttps://orangeshirtday.org/orange-shirt-day/\nhttps://www.pbs.org/articles/the-history-and-impact-of-residential-schools\n\nIdeas for how to commemorate the day: \n\nFriends Peace Teams: Toward Right Relationship – Events & Resources\nContact your senators and congressional representatives and urge them to pass the Truth and Healing Commission on the Indian Boarding School Policies Act (S.761) during the fall session of Congress. The act would establish a commission to investigate\, document and report on the histories of Indian boarding schools\, develop recommendations for federal efforts based on those findings and promote healing for survivors and descendants. It’s easy to contact your senators and representatives via Friends Committee on National Legislation. Click here.\n\nLocal educational opportunities: \nPhoenix Area Events: \n\nHeard Museum program on September 30th 10:00 AM to 12:15 PM\n\nAll through the year there is also a permanent boarding schools exhibit.\n\n\nPISVC (Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center) Open House on Saturday\, October 11th\, 2025 11:30 AM – 3:00 PM\n\nTucson Area Events: \n\nTucson Indian Center Presents… Voices of Resilience: Orange Shirt Day Gathering – Sept 30\, 10:30 AM – 3:30 PM\, 160 N. SUMMARY:Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument
DESCRIPTION:Organized by the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Sierra Club – \nJoin an AFN Interfaith group – AFN Registration: https://tockify.com/afnevents/detail/726/1758931200000 \nThe Trump administration is actively working to dismantle Arizona’s Newest national monument- Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni- in order to open it up to Uranium Mining (the very reason it was designated in the first place). Join the Sierra Club & AFN’s interfaith group for a weekend to connect with and learn more about why Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni is so important\, the threats it faces\, and what you can do to get involved in defending this sacred and critically important land. We will be spending time in the Northern parts of the monument\, as these sections are of highest priority for the Trump administration to dismantle. \nParticipants will meet on Friday by 5 pm at our group campsite. We will conclude as a group on Sunday late morning. We will begin the weekend on Saturday by attending the annual Endangered California Condor release at Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. There\, we will chat about the importance of the region to endangered species and what threats they face. We will then take time to explore a part of the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in the world\, protected by Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni National Monument\, and other protective land management designations. We will end the day at a beautiful overlook\, overlooking the Northern parts of the Monument. There\, we will discuss the threats to the region posed by uranium mining. Small hikes will be worked into the schedule as time and interest allows.
