SUMMARY:Save the Date: Gathering of Movement Builders
DESCRIPTION:In March\, AZIPL held a leadership development workshop called “Be the Spark\,” which is also taking place in other IPL’s around the country.   It was informative\, fun\, and energizing\, and an outgrowth of this workshop is that AZIPL is creating a new organizational structure that we believe will increase our effectiveness in the climate justice movement. \nWe are currently forming three Action Teams: \nEnvironmental Justice \nFood Justice \nRenewable Energy \nEach team will come together to share individuals’ interests\, skills\, and involvement in this area as well as awareness of projects and possible partners in this work.  From that beginning each team will develop next steps and actions to address relevant issues. \nAND YOU ARE INVITED! \nThe AZIPL Board will work over the summer to activate these teams so that we are ready for action in the fall.   Then all who wish to participate in these teams will gather to begin our work. \nSAVE THE DATE: Saturday\, October 13\, 9:00-12:30 \nLocation TBA

SUMMARY:Telling Your Story---for Mother Earth
DESCRIPTION:1:30 – 3:30 pm on April 21 at  South Mountain Community College\, 7050 24th Street\, Phoenix\, AZ\,  PAC#740 \nWe are storytelling animals.  Story is how we make sense of the world. Research and practice shows that the power of story can move and influence people to act for social change more effectively than abstract information\, scientific data or policy arguments.  In this workshop we’ll learn to deploy our strongest assets—our stories\, our humanity and our values—-as we advocate for our Mother\, the Earth.  We’ll explore ways story can be used to foster a healthier\, more just\, and sustainable world.

SUMMARY:Power Lines: Phoenix and the Making of the Modern Southwest
DESCRIPTION:NYU professor Andrew Needham discusses his latest book: In 1940\, Phoenix was a small\, agricultural city of sixty-five thousand\, and the Navajo Reservation was an open landscape of scattered sheepherders. Forty years later\, Phoenix had blossomed into a metropolis of 1.5 million people and the territory of the Navajo Nation was home to two of the largest strip mines in the world. Five coal-burning power plants surrounded the reservation\, generating electricity for export to Phoenix\, Los Angeles\, and other cities. Navajo officials initially hoped energy development would improve their lands too\, but as ash piles marked their landscape\, air pollution filled the skies\, and almost half of Navajo households remained without electricity\, many Navajos came to view power lines as a sign of their subordination in the Southwest.  Exploring the postwar developments of these two very different landscapes\, Power Lines tells the story of the far-reaching environmental and social inequalities of metropolitan growth\, and the roots of the contemporary coal-fueled climate change crisis.\n\nAndrew Needham explains how inexpensive electricity became a requirement for modern life in Phoenix—driving assembly lines and cooling the oppressive heat. Navajo officials initially hoped energy development would improve their lands too\, but as ash piles marked their landscape\, air pollution filled the skies\, and almost half of Navajo households remained without electricity\, many Navajos came to view power lines as a sign of their subordination in the Southwest. Drawing together urban\, environmental\, and American Indian history\, Needham demonstrates how power lines created unequal connections between distant landscapes and how environmental changes associated with suburbanization reached far beyond the metropolitan frontier. Needham also offers a new account of postwar inequality\, arguing that residents of the metropolitan periphery suffered similar patterns of marginalization as those faced in America’s inner cities. \nTelling how coal from Indian lands became the fuel of modernity in the Southwest\, Power Lines explores the dramatic effects that this energy system has had on the people and environment of the region. \nEvent will be held in the Agave Hall Community Room \n(AGA 1240-1242) \n\n  \nFor questions or additional information contact donna.thompson@cgc.edu 480.857.5534

SUMMARY:Before the Flood
DESCRIPTION:A Movie by Leonardo DiCaprio \nWe have now had three presidential debates with zero questions about climate change\, even though 2016 is on track to be the warmest year in history. It’s more important than ever that communities of faith understand what’s at stake and what they can do. \nBefore the Flood presents a riveting account of the dramatic changes now occurring around the world due to climate change\, as well as the actions we as individuals and as a society can take to prevent catastrophic disruption of life on our planet.

SUMMARY:Food Waste Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Here in the US\, more than 30% of all food is wasted. In a world with so many hungry people\, that’s a terrible shame. \nSadly\, it gets worse. Wasted food rots and creates greenhouse gas emissions. A lot of them. If you compare the emissions from food waste globally to the world’s nations\, it comes in third place – following China and the US. \nFortunately\, we can all make a difference. Take part in Food Waste Weekend. \nOn the weekend of September 23-25\, faith communities across the country will celebrate the first Food Waste Weekend\, or will commit to do so later this year. Food Waste Weekend is a partnership between GreenFaith and Ampleharvest.org\, a nonprofit that reduces food waste and hunger by empowering growers to donate excess produce to food pantries. \n70% of America’s food pantries are located in a house of worship. Faith communities are key partners in helping to ensure that excess food gets to hungry families. \nWe invite you to take part in Food Waste Weekend. Sign up now to take part on Sept. 23-25 or to schedule your Food Waste Weekend later this year. \nSample sermons and background information on food waste are available on the Food Waste Weekend website for Christian\, Jewish\, Muslim\, Buddhist\, Hindu\, Unitarian and Secular communities. You can also download the Food Waste Weekend Gameshow lesson plan for children in faith communities\, and other free resources. \nSpread the word by using #foodwasteweekend on social media. \nOur goal is to have 7\,500 congregations signed on to Food Waste Weekend and sharing this pressing message in their communities on September 23-25 or later this year. We look forward to congregations speaking out about this vital issue. \nIn faith\, \nRev. Fletcher Harper \nExecutive Director \nGreenFaith

SUMMARY:Self-Care for the Activist Soul
DESCRIPTION:Despite deep passion for ecological activism\, many of us working to address climate change and other ecological issues often face burn out. \nThis 2 hour workshop will draw on Buddhist mindfulness and other spiritual practices in order to bring healing to our souls and energy to our activism. \nThis is an interfaith gathering; people of all faith traditions and no faith tradition are welcome to attend. The only requirement is that you perceive climate change to be a matter of spiritual and/or religious importance. \nWe join together in a spirit of open-heartedness\, and a shared sense of concern for planetary well-being\, recognizing that ecological instability threatens all beings on earth. \nRSVP via Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/730106520475108/ \nSnacks will be provided.

SUMMARY:Phoenix With Standing Rock - #NoDAPL Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:The movement to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline is growing stronger by the day\, and it’s time for all of us to rise up and play a role in this fight – no matter where we live. \nJoin Renetto-Mario Etsitty and Stacey Champion on Tuesday\, September 13 for a solidarity action and rally at Steele Indian School Park (use the Central Ave. entrance to park across from George and Dragon) at 4:00 PM calling on President Obama to instruct the Army Corps of Engineers to revoke the permits for this dirty oil pipeline. We will line the sidewalks with our bodies\, signs & voices on the NE corner of Central Ave. & Indian School Rd. from 4 – 5 PM\, then will march up Central Avenue together and into the park to hear from Native speakers who will also address local issues surrounding water and desecration of sacred land\, followed by a drum circle. Those joining us with small children are welcome to gather in the park for the first hour for safety issues as there is a lot of traffic at this time. \nBy gathering at Steele Indian School Park\, we hope to call attention to the brave water and land protectors at Standing Rock and encourage the Army Corps of Engineers\, City\, County & State elected leaders in Arizona and the President of the United States to take a stand against greed and dirty energy which puts our greatest natural resource- WATER – at risk for generations to come. \nLet us know you’re coming — sign up on this page to receive action updates. \nPlease bring art and banners — and be sure to share on social media with #NoDAPL.
